Research Activities

The research activities of the Department of Animal Breeding and Husbandry involve the following thematic units:

1. Genetic breeding of farm animals. (Planning of programs of genetic breeding and estimation of genetic parameters in populations of farm animals).

2. Livestock farming (Configuration of productive systems and handling of farm animals with emphasis in the management, the ethology and welfare of the raised animal species for production).

3. Physiology of Productive traits of the farm animals. (Adipose tissue, enzyme activities, carcass traits of farm animals).

4. Quality of animal products (mainly study of the parameters related to the quality of meat and eggs, while strong emphasis is given to the quality of milk and other animal products).

5. Population, biochemical and molecular genetics of farm animals. (Biochemical polymorphisms - starch electrophoresis, isolation and characterization of genes. Detection of DNA polymorphisms).
