EQUIPMENT - FACILITIES

 

Water chemical analyses:

Equipment and facilities for monitoring of sea- and freshwater physicochemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, temperature, ammonia, nitrite, chloride, suspended solids, pH etc.).

 

Biochemical analyses:

Equipment and facilities (glass ware, lyophiliser, GC, GC-MS, centrifuges, digital image analysis etc.) for the determination of: 1) Haematological parameters (triglycerides, cholesterol, total lipids, albumin, glucose, cortisol, osmolality, haematocrit, haemoglobin, blood gases, blood pH, blood electrolytes etc.). 2) Carcass proximate composition (total lipids, protein, moisture, ash). 3) Liver total lipids, glycogen, ascorbic acid, moisture etc. 4) Fatty acid composition in diets and biological tissues (liver, fillet, visceral fat, plasma). 5) Digestive enzymes analysis.

 

Fish behavioural observation:

In all recirculating water systems, video-cameras are installed and connected to a central computer equipped with the appropriate software for recording and evaluating fish behaviour (Ethovision, Noldus).

 

Underwater sound transmission:

A complete system for underwater sound transmission (e.g. music) is available (amplifiers, hydrophone, transducers etc.). Sound intensity, frequencies and duration of transmission can be adjusted to meet research needs.

 

Fish metazoan parasites:

Equipment and facilities (microscopes, stereoscopes, chemicals etc.) for fish metazoan parasite studies (fresh and permanent samples preparation).

 

Planktonic and benthic organisms:

Equipment and facilities (special temperature, light and humidity control chamber, high powered microscope with attached camera, chemicals etc.) needed for phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic organisms (mostly molluscs and crustacean) studies.

 

Recirculating water systems:

 

Fresh Water - 1:

Total capacity 100 m³. It consists of more than 70 tanks of various sizes for educational and experimental purposes, two sets of mechanical and two sets of biological filters, as well as, three sets of UV lamps. Also, the system is equipped with one special large and five small water-cooling apparata and automatic water temperature and light control devices. Special types of air pumps for oxygen supply are included.

 

Fresh Water - 2:

Total capacity 5 m³. It consists of 24 tanks of two different sizes. It serves mostly experimental purposes, like fish controlled reproduction and hydroponics. Three sets of mechanical and biological filters are included, as well as, water heating apparatus.

 

Sea Water - 1:

Total capacity 40 m³. It contains 40 tanks of various sizes for educational and experimental purposes. Three sets of mechanical and three sets of biological filters, as well as, two sets of UV lamps are included. Also, the system is equipped with two water-cooling apparata and automatic water temperature and light control devices. Special types of air pumps for oxygen supply are included.

 

Sea Water - 2:

Total capacity 11 m³. It contains 80 tanks of various sizes for educational and experimental purposes. Four sets of mechanical and three sets of biological filters, as well as, one sets of UV lamps are included. Also, the system is equipped with water-cooling apparatus and special types of air pumps for oxygen supply.

 

Fresh or Sea Water:

Total capacity 6 m³. It contains 20 tanks of two sizes and can be easily converted to fresh or sea water system. It serves mostly experimental purposes. Two sets of mechanical and biological filters, as well as, two sets of UV lamps are included. Also, the system is equipped with water-cooling apparatus and light control devices. Special types of air pumps for oxygen supply are included

 

Supporting mechanical equipment:

Special trailer for seawater transportation, and several sets of spare air and water pumps, pipes, proper machinery and electrical equipment are currently kept. Both fresh and sea water systems are supported by a proper size automatic electrical power generator.

 

Field work:

Equipment and facilities (portable kit for monitoring water chemical and physical parameters, water and biological sampling, etc.) for almost any type of hydrobiological fieldwork.
