Research & Publications

The scientific subject of the Department is clearly interdisciplinary as it combines Genetics, Nutrition, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Technology, Hygiene, Biotechnology, Ethology and Management.

Consequently, the research activity of the Department covers a significant range of scientific topics, which are treated by the Laboratories of Anatomy & Physiology of Farm Animals, Animal Breeding & Husbandry, Applied Hydrobiology και Nutritional Physiology & Feeding.

The research is carried out individually by each laboratory of the Department, with collaborations between laboratories, as well as with interdepartmental (within the Agricultural University of Athens) or inter-institutional (with other universities in the country or abroad) collaborations.

The research activities in the laboratory facilities of the Department of Animal Science are conducted under specific safety rules for the facilities, the staff (members of the Faculty, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students) as well as the visiting researchers.

Published Work

The Department of Animal Science (DAS) presents a high research footprint, as certified and quantified by the number of publications of faculty members in international journals of the Citation Index and the number of citations to their work, which indicates the international recognition and influence of the research work. According to the latest official data of the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) of the Agricultural University of Athens (as extracted from the Scopus database), in the five-year period 2019 – 2023 a total of: 577 publications and 14,823 citations were recorded, which correspond on average to 20.6 publications, 529.4 citations and an h-index of 17.36 per faculty member, as shown in the graph below.

Research Projects

The Research Projects are indicative of the high research footprint of the Department of Animal Science. Through the projects, the excellence of the research groups is supported, the equipment of the Laboratories is enriched and maintained and the preparation of degree and doctoral theses, as well as the internship of students, is assisted. In the years 2019-2025, the total budget of the research programs reached 6,330,597 €, with 39% (2,447,342 €) coming from competitive European Horizon Projects and National Projects from European Funds, as shown in the graph below.
