Welcome
to the Department of Animal Science, School of Animal Biosciences, at the Agricultural University of Athens. First known as the Department of General and Specialized Animal Husbandry & Dairying in 1920, the Department has a long history of connecting basic and applied research for the benefit of animals and humans. Even today, teaching and research continue to advance our understanding of the biology of terrestrial and aquatic animals and to address essential issues facing the livestock and aquaculture industries.

The mission of the Department of Animal Science is to provide high-quality education at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, aligned with the latest scientific developments and covering the fields of: (a) Genetics, (b) Animal Nutrition, (c) Physiology, (d) Molecular Biology, (e) Technology, (f) Animal Hygiene, (g) Biotechnology in animal production, (h) Ethology, and (i) Animal and livestock farm or aquaculture unit management, as well as other related scientific disciplines. In addition, the Department promotes basic and applied research and social development, upholds the independence of science, and strives for meritocracy and societal benefit through the utilisation of scientific and technological outcomes.
The purpose of the Department is to provide comprehensive training to scientists who will be capable of applying the principles of: (a) Biology, (b) Technology, and (c) Economics, enabling them to manage the innovations and rapid international developments that arise in pursuit of improved and more efficient production systems across the entire spectrum of animal production and aquaculture.
